Note
- The SE/30 can support up to 128 MB RAM, but
this requires the use of 32-bit addressing and Mode32. The SE/30
ROMs natively only support 24-bit addressing, which has a maximum
RAM ceiling of 8 MB. The SE/30 can use 4 MB and 16 MB SIMMs with
Mode32 and 32-bit addressing. It takes eight 16 MB SIMMs to reach
128 MB RAM.

(Macworld, March 1989) The
SE/30 was the second Macintosh, after the Macintosh IIx, to ship
with a 68030 processor. All SE/30s contained a hard drive. There was
no "slot" for a second internal floppy like on the SE. Like the
IIx, the SE/30 shipped with an FDHD SuperDrive, capable of reading 1.4
MB MS-DOS and Apple II ProDOS disks, as well as Mac disks. The SE/30
boasted a new design for the chassis. Instead of cards sitting parallel
to the motherboard, they stood perpendicular to it.

Comments
The SE/30 was the greatest of the compact Macs. Unfortunately,
its original $4000 plus price tag put it out of reach of most
home users. It was 32-bit capable (with Mode32 software
patch) and could support up to 128 MB of RAM. This computer
is highly sought after by collectors. Although Apple called the SE/30 a
32-bit computer, its ROMs were dirty, containing some 24-bit code.
The SE/30 is not capable of running in 32-bit addressing mode without Mode32.
You need 32-bit addressing to use more than 8 MB RAM. With Mode32,
the SE/30 can address up to 128 MB RAM. The SE/30 shares the same
architecture of the Macintosh IIx. The SE/30 has a ROM SIMM slot
that must be filled in order for the computer to function. Users
report that it is possible to replace the SE/30's ROM with that of a
IIsi or IIfx. This makes the SE/30 a clean 32-bit system.
