George Lucas may be pushing the technology edge with the new Star Wars prequels, but who can really say that they are anywhere near as great as the original Trilogy. In that spirit, it seems fitting to revisit the greatest sci-fi movie ever on the greatest computer platform of its time. The Star Wars arcade game for the Macintosh is available for download at the bottom of this page.
Remember all those quarters you spent on this one? The Star Wars arcade game was a smash hit. The force was with Atari™ when this one blew away the arcades back in 1983. The game was truly a marvel of design in its day. Star Wars was part of a long line of Atari™ arcade games designed with vector graphics. Although not quite up to the standards of even the original Nintendo™ home unit, vector graphics gave early gaming a realism never before achieved. The game play is intense and the voices of R2-D2, Obi Wan Kenobi, and Luke Skywalker are a nice touch. "Use the Force, Luke!"
The Mac version is true to the original arcade game minus the yellow, green, and red-colored vector lines. It plays smoothly and feels like the real thing. You even get the voices present in the arcade version.

The game shots pictured above and below were taken on a Classic II. The game should play on any Macintosh but I have not personally tested it on anything lower than an SE with 4 MB of RAM. It even runs in Classic mode on OSX. The controls are simple. Use the mouse to move and the mouse button to fire. Press the spacebar to get to the menu options. If you start the game and don't hear any sound, press the spacebar, select options, and turn up the volume. Enjoy!
