01.28  MacNN  Jobs urges investors to "hang in there", Staff: Apple CEO Steve Jobs acknowledged the current instability of the company’s stocks, but urged investors to remain confident due to Apple’s current and future strengths.

01.28  Electronista  Verizon results show iPhone aiding AT&T, Staff: Verizon today posted its latest quarterly results, revealing mixed fortunes for the company and the potential effect of the iPhone.

01.28  MacNN  Germany claims 70,000 iPhones sold, Staff: Deutsche Telekom, the owner of T-Mobile, says that some 70,000 German iPhone subscribers have been added in the 11 weeks since the product’s debut in the country on November 9th of last year.

01.28  Apple Matters  Sorry Apple, Netflix Is Just Too Good, James R. Stoup: I like what Apple is trying to accomplish with their new movie rental service and applaud them for boldly moving in the right direction. Unfortunately, they are a long way from reaching the point at which I would actually pay for this service.

01.28  Macworld  Old Mac needs better browser, Christopher Breen: You can still find a couple of browsers that work with OS 9.

01.28  MacDailyNews  If history holds true, profit taking in Apple stock will soon exhaust itself, Staff: While the Street frets about slowing iPod sales (or how everyone on earth might already have one), it’s easy to forget Apple’s range.

01.25  MacNN  Tiger, Leopard flaw an "enhancement"?, Staff: Similar to the Office 2008-related permissions problem reported earlier today, Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger and 10.5 Leopard users may be susceptible to additional vulnerabilities.

01.25  Low End Mac  Hooked by a PowerBook Duo, Walker Quine: My first Mac was an old PowerBook Duo 2300 I got as a birthday gift about four years ago. That’s all it took to get me hooked.

01.24  Low End Mac  Is the MacBook Air This Road Warrior’s Dream Machine?, Andrew Fishkin: With all of the articles popping up about the new MacBook Air, I thought that I, a longtime user and proponent of ultraportable laptops should chime in.

01.23  Mac Night Owl  Reconsidering Apple’s Future, Gene Steinberg: Now that Wall Street has, as usual, run off half-cocked over apparent flattening of iPod sales, the pundits are at it again. Has Apple’s luster begun to fate? Are iPod sales destined to tank? What’s Apple’s next great thing and will it arrive in time to halt the renewed atmosphere of gloom and doom for the company?

01.22  Apple Matters  The Future of the MacBook Air and What it Will Become, Sebastien Gomez: Everyone agrees (or almost everyone) that the Macbook Air is an astonishing machine but it lacks something. Not a superdrive or ethernet connection, but obviously a better price.

01.22  Mac Night Owl  Apple’s Best Quarter Ever, But the Sky is Falling, Gene Steinberg: I know Wall Street dwells on negatives these days, particularly because of economic troubles in the U.S. Indeed, Apple’s stock tanked in after-hours trading after its quarterly financials were released Tuesday afternoon. But there are an awful lot of good things to talk about, even if investors don’t see it that way.

01.21  Low End Mac  Thinking Different about Liberal vs. Conservative Mac Users, Charles Moore: Low End Mac jumps into the waters that Vectronic’s Apple World has been treading for over a year now. Do you really want to get political Charles? It has caused us no end in grief.

01.18  Apple Matters  The MacBook Air Is a Horrible, Horrible Product, Tanner Godarzi: I’m not one to immediately write off any product as horrible without considering what it can do, but in all honesty, I think the MacBook Air is a misplaced product.

01.15  Low End Mac  MacBook Air, Staff: Apple has taken a completely different approach to ultralight notbook computers with the MacBook Air. Where others use small screens, shrunken keyboards, and underpowered CPUs, Apple has gone very, very thin so the MacBook Air can have a 13.3 inch LED backlit display, a full-sized keyboard, and a 1.6 GHz Core2 Duo CPU - along with up to 5 hours of battery life without turning off AirPort.

01.15  Low End Mac  Something New in the Air, Dan Knight: We’re not at the Macworld Expo this year, but we’re tracking feeds from several different websites. Kudos to AppleMatters for a text-only feed that’s updated constantly! We miss the days when Apple would webcast the keynote live.

01.15  Low End Mac  Restore Stability to a Troubled Mac with a Clean System Install, Keith Winston: In the spirit of renewal, and to make up for already abandoned resolutions, I set out to reload my iPod and iBook from scratch. Both were showing signs of minor weirdness that I suspected were related to my recent in-place upgrade from Mac OS X 10.4 "Tiger" to 10.5 "Leopard".

01.15  Macworld  iTunes movie rentals-almost there, Brian Chen: Finally, Apple extended its iTunes content partnerships to include every major movie studio. These were all major, crucial steps Apple took to spare us a trip to the video store and bring instant movie entertainment to our homes.

01.15  Mac Night Owl  The MacBook Air - Definitely NOT a Desktop Replacement, Gene Steinberg: When the analysts get the essence of a new Apple product announcement essentially correct, you sort of expect that a few of the mainstream members of the press probably got an advanced peek. No doubt you’ll also see some early reviews that clearly not rush jobs, but clearly indicate the author had a lot of face time with Apple’s light-as-a-feather notebook before it was officially unveiled.

01.15  Wired  Wozniak Backs Captain Crunch in Net Video Startup, Marty Graham: Tech legend Steve Wozniak has signed on to the board of directors of en2go, a young publicly traded company founded by music innovator Tolga Kotas and legendary phone hacker John Draper -- better known as Captain Crunch.

01.15  MacDailyNews  Apple’s ’Get a Mac’ Macworld Expo ad slams Microsoft: Happy New Year! (with video), Staff: Apple today aired a special "Get a Mac" ad to start CEO Steve Job’s Macworld Expo keynote address. The ad probably is meant only for Macworld Expo audiences (a la Will Ferrell’s "I’m a porn actor" Mac "Switch" ad from yesteryear).

01.15  TUAW  Steve pitches the MacBook Air at CNBC, Dave Caolo: As he usually does, Steve went on CNBC after this morning’s keynote presentation to pitch his company’s newest goodie.

01.15  TUAW  AAPL, Blockbuster and Netflix down following Macworld Keynote, Mike Schramm: Blockbuster and Netflix’s stocks both took big hits based on what we just heard Steve say at Macworld.

01.15  TUAW  Macbook Air: The downside, Dave Caolo: This post is meant to point out certain aspects of the little machine that may not be immediately obvious.

01.15  TUAW  Apple TV Take 2, Christina Warren: The Apple TV has hardly been the most successful Apple product. What is Apple’s plan to try to change that? Welcome to Apple TV Redux!

01.15  ars technica  Time Capsule not coming to AirPort Extreme, at least not yet, David Chartier : Though Apple’s new "backup appliance" may not be quite as hot of an item as the MacBook Air, it certainly hit the radar of anyone concerned with backing up their precious data.

01.14  Low End Mac  We Need More than 2 USB Ports in MacBooks, Dan Knight: It’s been quite a while since I last used a notebook computer with an external keyboard. The last time was probably three years ago, when I bought a couple of refurbished 1.25 GHz eMacs so I could work on the same machine at both locations. After four years of heavy use, my 400 MHz G4 PowerBook became a field computer.

01.09  Mac Night Owl  The Mac Value Equation Revisited, Gene Steinberg: Year after year, I’ve been battling the eternal falsehood that Macs cost more than similarly- priced Windows hardware. This ongoing war rages long and and hard, but at the end of the day, I believe I win the argument on the basis of a simple and supremely logical method of comparison: You have to match the features of the competing computers as closely as possible.

01.08  Mac Night Owl  Is Apple Moving Away From Pro Computers?, Gene Steinberg: I’m sure many of you were blindsided when Apple quietly upgraded the Mac Pro and the Xserve to use the new Intel "Harpertown" Xeon chips, code-named Penryn. Now it’s perfectly clear that this is a worthwhile upgrade. The new chips are not only faster, but cooler running, consuming less power.

01.07  MacosXrumors  Andrea Jung joins Apple’s board, Alexandros Roussos: Since 1999, Jung is CEO and Chief Executive of Avon Products, a cosmetics company which operates in more than 135 countries.

01.05  statesman.com  Don’t Bet on Gates’ Keynote Predictions, Brian Bergstein: For the 10th time, Bill Gates will inaugurate the International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas by touting new Microsoft Corp. products and describing his view of the future of computing. Before you rush to the edge of your seat Sunday, consider this: Gates is a mediocre prognosticator.

01.04  Low End Mac  Upgrading a Power Mac G4 on the Cheap, Mark Garbowski: I have been talking to several of my friends about low-end Macs and how easy it is get a decent Mac for not a whole lot of money. I have noticed that there are several arguments that most folks use against going to Mac. Number one is cost, and the other ones included lack of gaming and lack of software to run on Macs (that last one is more of a myth, in my opinion).

01.04  Low End Mac  Think Bull: Why the Shuttering of Think Secret Is No Big Deal, Ed Eubanks Jr: Over the past few weeks, those who pay attention to Apple and Mac news (especially rumors and speculation regarding upcoming announcements) will have learned of Apple’s settlement with the Think Secret website and its owner, Nick Ciarelli. Lots of kerfuffle has been made about whether this is good or bad for Apple, the press, and the Apple fan community - most have concluded that it is generally bad.

01.04  Macworld  2008 Predictions: Your turn, Philip Michaels: Elsewhere on the site, we’ve got our annual predictions article posted, or as we in the writing biz are fond of calling it, the chance to be wrong in public.

01.04  Macworld  2008 Predictions: Macworld’s annual forecast of the year ahead, Staff: With the calendar flipping from one year to the next this past week, it’s only natural to wonder what the next 365 days have in store. It’s even more understandable if you’re a Mac fan.

01.04  The New York Times  An Apple TV With a Blu-ray Player?, Saul Hansell: Rumors are flying fast and furious over what Steve Jobs will pull out of his blue-jean pocket a week from Tuesday at his annual speech at the Macworld Expo in San Francisco. These include a movie rental service for iTunes, a super small notebook computer perhaps with a solid-state hard drive, a notebook docking station, and new features for the iPhone.

01.02  Apple Matters  Web 2.0 Applications Are Invading the Desktop, Aayush Arya: The first Mac application to bring a Web 2.0 application to the desktop was iTunes.

01.02  Mac Night Owl  How Will Apple Cope with Success?, Gene Steinberg: No doubt you’ve read the stories already. On the basis of one set of online measurement samples, Apple’s share of the operating system universe exceeded 8% during the final two days of 2008, whereas Windows Vista scores just over 10%.

01.01  Low End Mac  Think Secret: Struck Down by Apple’s Asteroid, Dan Knight: I hate to end the year on a rant, but some journalists just don’t understand the difference between a blog and a full-fledged website.

01.01  Low End Mac  My Experiences with Mac OS X, Trevor Wale: My history with the Mac OS is considerably shorter than my time with Windows, but it is no less interesting.

01.01  Low End Mac  The Tables Have Turned as Apple Grows Market Share, Tommy Thomas: There was a time not so long ago where the Mac was dismissed by the mainstream because "it had little software, it wasn’t a PC, it was inferior." Those were some of the lame excuses I heard many times about Macs vs. PCs. My, my, my...how times have changed.

01.01  Apple Matters  If You Were Wondering, The iPod Is Officially "There", James R. Stoup: Two friends of mine recently went into Best Buy in hopes of buying an iPod. They asked a salesperson (don’t want to say salesman because I’d hate to be called a sexist) for advice on which one to get. Would you like to know what he recommended? I kid you not, he suggested they buy a Zune.

01.01  Think Secret  Apple, Think Secret settle lawsuit, Staff: Apple and Think Secret have settled their lawsuit, reaching an agreement that results in a positive solution for both sides. Think Secret will no longer be published.

01.01  Apple Matters  Will the Next Decade See the End of the Dominance of the Windows PC?, Chris Howard: Apple has proven one thing: even in the computer industry, despite what is believed, there is room for proprietary systems.

01.01  Apple Matters  Why is Apple Getting a Bad Rap?, Sebastien Gomez: Back when the Steves started Apple and made it what it is today, this strange stigma surrounded them. The bad boys of Silicon Valley were merely kids trying to reinvent what they thought was a corporate monopoly controlled by "suits." We all know the story of what occurred next, but what really happened was an unhealthy backlash towards what they thought was an innovative company.

01.01  MacWorld  Fix Mac slowdowns, Staff: Does your Mac seem to be getting slower over time? This probably isn’t your imagination. As you use your computer, a number of factors can gradually lead to poorer performance.

01.01  Mac Night Owl  I Agree: Apple Should Ignore the Enterprise!, Gene Steinberg: Earlier this month, I had the pleasure of welcoming Alykhan Jetha, CEO of Marketcircle, Inc., on a recent episode of the tech show. As someone who develops software for small businesses, AJ said that Apple shouldn’t really waste time and money trying to grab enterprise customers.

01.01  Mac Night Owl  Will Macs Soon Change?, Gene Steinberg: It has been suggested that Apple had spent a huge sum just in switching processor architectures, and revising form factors might have raised development costs considerably, but, now that Apple is beginning its third year of the Intel transition, isn’t it high time something change in the way Macs look?

01.01  Mac Night Owl  The Real Losers in the Think Secret Settlement, Gene Steinberg: I don’t know about you, but I have always had mixed feelings about Mac rumor sites. Yes, they often make for an entertaining read. Sometimes they even get the facts correct, or mostly correct, and clue us in on a genuine new Apple product or service.

01.01  Mac Night Owl  Let’s Not Forget the Mac OS We Used to Know and Love, Gene Steinberg: I know that many of you are the proud owners of vintage Macs, dating back to the very first model, back in 1984. Of course, there’s not much they can do today with anything but the software and operating systems released when those computers were first built, or a few years thereafter.

01.01  ars technica  Mac OS X market share sets new record at the end of 2007, Charles Jade: With the end of 2007, Apple celebrates two years of the Intel Mac, and what a two years it has been. Web metrics firm Net Applications has just released numbers for December.

01.01  ars technica  PlayStation emulator released for iPhone, Justin Berka: There have been some hints in patents about games for the iPhone, but thus far none have materialized. In the meantime, there are still a few options for gaming on the device, including a few native games and an NES emulator. And as of Monday, MacNN is reporting that there’s a new emulator out for the iPhone, this one made for emulating original PlayStation games.

01.01  MacNN  Apple’s Safari Web browser share hit new all-time high of 5.58% in December 2007, Staff: Net Applications’ Web Browser stats for December 2007 show Apple’s Safari hit a new all- time high with 5.58% share of the browsers visiting Net Applications’ network of websites worldwide.

01.01  MacNN  R.I.P. Netscape Navigator, Staff: AOL, which in 1999 acquired Netscape Communications Corporation, has pulled the plug on Netscape Navigator. AOL will stop supporting Netscape Navigator (all versions) on February 1, 2008.

01.01  MacMegasite  My predictions for 2008, Staff: It’s that time of the year again, so here are my predictions for 2008. Some of these may be announced at MacWorld Expo, starting Jan. 15.
