Steve Jobs
Steve Jobs
Apple caved in to the environmental nutballs this week and released a statement from Steve Jobs proclaiming that "upon investigating Apple's current practices and progress towards [environmental] goals, I was surprised to learn that in many cases Apple is ahead of, or will soon be ahead of, most of its competitors in these areas." Well, get yourself a piece of cake Mr. Jobs, you are too clever by far. What Steve is trying to say is that Apple has always been conscious of environmental issues and has always worked toward sound environmental policies. I wrote an article back in November 2006 aptly titled, "Apple Should Ignore the Nuts at Greenpeace," that expressed my opinion that Apple should ignore the wack-jobs at Greenpeace, an extreme leftist environmental organization. Apple is now running a banner on Apple.com with the catchy and meaningless phrase "A Greener Apple." By running this banner and releasing this statement, Apple is giving credibility to the nutballs at Greenpeace.

Greener Apple

My first inclination is to say that this tactic is a mistake. You don't confront Kool-Aid drinkers. You marginalize them by paying them no heed. Apple has nothing to apologize about and it doesn't need to explain itself to hippies. Unfortunately, now that Apple has taken this tact, you can expect to read and hear all over the written and verbal media that Greenpeace has caused real change at Apple. Nonsense.

Apple is run by men who spent their youth hitting bongs and dreaming of things to protest against. They don't need any prompting from the likes of Greenpeace to push the environmentally friendly envelope and pass the higher costs on to us dopes crazy enough to buy new Macs at a premium over comparable Windows systems. Even though I don't share the same politics as Apple's top leadership, I admire the company for its innovation and "Think Different" mentality. Creativity is often tied to a liberal mind.

Throughout history, change has come not from conservative thinkers, but from the liberals. Liberals, with all their nutty ideas and illogical way of seeing the world, tend to push past the bounds that keep conservatives living with the status quo. Apple's liberal leaders have been working on environmentalism for years. They have already pushed the bounds of what is currently possible and I believe that they will continue to do so.

Al Gore
Al Gore

Just take a look at who prominently sits on Apple's Board of Directors. Presidential has-been and Apple Board Member Al Gore, the same guy who "invented the Internet," has probably been hounding Steve Jobs to release a statement ever since Greenpeace starting their green Apple campaign. Al's street cred with the nutballs, his primary constituency, has probably been suffering. My problem with Gore is that he is a hypocrite. The man lives in a mansion located in the posh Belle Meade area of Nashville that consumes more electricity every month than the average American household uses in an entire year. Limousine liberals like Al want everyone else to conserve as long as it doesn't affect their millionaire's lifestyle.

Al's Mansion
A millionaire's castle: Al Gore's energy munching mansion

But the liberals are about to take over the United States and it is to Apple's advantage to have their acclaimed moral leader, Al Gore, playing on its side. The last bastion of moderation will be gone if the Democrats take the White House in 2008. Having been out of power for over a generation, these people are going to run wild. If they win, Americans can expect higher taxes, increased pork barrel spending, and more government regulation and intrusion on the rights of individuals and property owners. Maybe they won't take the presidency, but it just might happen and successful companies like Apple need to plan for the future. George Bush's "War on Terror" will be replaced by the liberal's "War on Capitalism."

George Bush: Kicking butt and taking names since 2000

It is going to be a tough time for the middle class. With increased taxes and U.S. military retreat all over the world, you can expect higher unemployment, a general slow down in commerce and possibly a few more American buildings tumbling to the ground. Steve Jobs' statement in support of the nutballs at Greenpeace is the first salvo in the war of against capitalism. The War on Capitalism will be long and difficult. Grab your Mac, canned foods and bottled water, and hunker down in the bomb shelter because this might get a little messy.

This is the least pleasant Mac-related article I´ve read in a long time. In seven paragraphs, you managed to use "nuts," "nutty" or "nutballs" six times (plus "wackos," "wack-jobs" and "hippies" for good measure) to describe the environmental movement. You sound like an angry eighth-grader who gets all of his news from The Rush Limbaugh Show.

And "Al Gore invented the internet?" So, so tired. Whenever I read that old chestnut, I know immediately that the author is either uninformed or a liar, and I automatically discount any arguments he might otherwise be making. In this case, though, there was no point to this article, other than an ignorant rant for its own sake.

I have to disagree. I think the point of the article is to show that Apple´s move to support the crazies at Greenpeace was ill-informed and could have some bad consequences for faithful Mac users like me.

You know Kris, for a Mac site, you are alienating a lot of potential readers. Although I don´t fall in the "liberal" category, the great majority of Mac zealots fall squarely in the Greenpeace camp.

Kudos Hookerman! Keep up the good work. Don´t let the nutballs get you down.

I don´t think that most normal people would disagrree with you Kris. Greenpeace is an extreme group. Great article. I got my laugh on for the week.

It is so refreshing to read an honest opinion about extremist groups like Greenpeace without all the political correctness. I hate the liberals and they are going to ruin us all. Keep up the fight Kris. Greenpeace sucks!

FireFox on Saturday, May 05, 2007 at 18:59

If Apple keeps supporting dangerous terrorist groups like Greenpeace, I am going to stop supporting them. All they really understand is money. If enough people stand up and protest these people, Apple would stop doing this stupid stuff.

I get made fun of all the time by my conservative friends at work because I use a "hippie" computer. Apple´s idiotic statement supporting Greenpeace is not going to win it any new business. People with real jobs buy new computers. Hippies sit around and sing songs all day. Not exactly the kind of customer I would want to try to sale expensive computers to.

This article isn´t slamming the environmental movement, it´s slamming Greenpeace...who has become marginalized through their incessant media whoring. The entire "Green My Apple" campaign has been proven to be a farse, based on nothing more than marketing hype and a strong desire to keep their (Greenpeace´s) name in the headlines. In this case they are, indeed, wackos.

I think the article is hilarious. I love it when lunatics like buddhistMonkey are moved to cry unfair. Well done Kris.

Hookerman,

You can not be serious. Do you understand the great things Greenpeace has done for our society? We are killing the environment for our future generations. Are you okay with this? Obviously you don´t have kids, or else you would be concerned about their future and the future of their children. How day you put "Kicking butt and taking names since 2000" in reference to the "president". I am appalled. You sir should be ashamed of yourself!

Quite possiably the worst Mac related article I´ve ever read. My first and last visit to this site. Rename the site ´Bored American with a Apple laptop - spends far too much time with head up his butt!´. Get out more......

Anti-Americanism is a sign of a Kool-Aid drinker. If you don´t like America, stop buying our computers.

The way Hookerman puts it is that the Democrats DIRECTLY fund Greenpeace yet don´t believe in anything they say or stand for.

In theory its like saying that Republicans are funded solely by Fox news...

IckyThump on Tuesday, June 26, 2007 at 16:26

Typical Republican paranoia, The ´war on terror´ has to be the stupidest statement in history.

I await your liberal-bashing bullcrap Hookerman...

As (God forbid) one of those people who cares about the future of the planet and its people, I am shaking with curiosity as to which of your colorful array of meaningless, disparaging nouns would first be attributed to me. I will echo those who have posted before me in saying that this was by far the worst Apple-related article I have ever stumbled upon. I sincerely hope you grow out of this mindless, sophomoric antagonism.
